What are the different types of loader control joysticks?

Nov 04, 2025

Loader control joysticks are mainly divided into two types: pilot-operated joysticks and mechanical joysticks.

As a type of heavy equipment widely used in construction, mining, and other industries, the design of the loader's control joystick is crucial for ease of operation and safety. Currently, the mainstream loader control joysticks on the market are mainly divided into pilot-operated joysticks and mechanical joysticks.

Pilot-operated Joysticks
A pilot-operated joystick is a joystick operated through a hydraulic system. It uses changes in hydraulic oil pressure to control various movements of the loader. The advantages of pilot-operated joysticks are flexible operation, rapid response, and the ability to provide more precise control. Furthermore, due to the use of a hydraulic system, pilot-operated joysticks transmit force more smoothly, reducing shocks and vibrations during operation.

However, pilot-operated joysticks also have certain disadvantages. First, the maintenance cost of hydraulic systems is relatively high, requiring regular checks of the hydraulic oil quality and quantity. Second, in extreme environments, such as high or low temperatures, the performance of the hydraulic oil may be affected, thus affecting the sensitivity and accuracy of the joystick.

Mechanical Joysticks
Unlike pilot-operated joysticks, mechanical joysticks directly control the loader's movements through a mechanical connection. The advantages of this type of joystick are its simple structure, high reliability, and relatively low maintenance costs. Furthermore, mechanical joysticks are more adaptable to ambient temperature and less affected by changes in hydraulic fluid properties.

However, mechanical joysticks also have some drawbacks. Due to their relatively direct operation, they require a higher level of operator skill. Additionally, during prolonged operation, mechanical joysticks may cause operator hand fatigue, affecting operational accuracy.
